Here is where to start around Vrchlabí and Špindlerův Mlýn, whether to book a ski school, what to rent and how your first day can go, step by step. You can learn to ski at any age, and your first day does not need to involve a proper run. It is enough to learn how to stand, get moving, stop and get back up the hill. All of this is practised on a gentle slope where nobody rushes you. Below you will find where such slopes are around Vrchlabí and Špindlerův Mlýn in the Krkonoše (Giant Mountains), whether to book a ski school, what to rent and what your first day might look like. We took the details on ski areas and schools from their websites in September 2026, so check how they operate in winter 2026/27 before you go. ## Where to start: gentle slopes nearby For your first day, look for a practice area with a conveyor lift, and a wide blue run for later. Under the Czech technical standard ČSN 01 8027, blue marks easy runs whose gradient must not exceed 25 %. For the very beginning, though, a shorter and gentler stretch by the conveyor lift is all you need. According to their operators or official tourist websites, these places suit beginners: - Kněžický vrch in Vrchlabí, 400 metres from the town centre: six of its nine runs are blue, and there are two conveyor lifts and ski schools. According to the operator, the terrain suits beginners. - Horní Mísečky in Špindlerův Mlýn: the Czech tourism portal Kudy z nudy recommends it to beginners, and the town describes it as suitable for beginner skiers and snowboarders. - Černý Důl: wide, gentle runs and the LIVE park learning area with conveyor lifts. - Benecko: gentle runs that, according to the Krkonoše tourist portal, suit beginners and lower intermediates. - Strážné: a very gentle practice slope and shorter runs. > **Tip from the shop:** Before your first run, look at the piste map on the ski area's website. You will know where the practice area and the blue runs are, and where not to go just yet. ## Ski school or a friend? A friend who skis well is not necessarily good at teaching. An instructor knows the order in which to take the steps, can spot mistakes before they become habits and will tell you where not to go just yet. Lessons at the ski schools on Kněžický vrch last 50 minutes, and the SKOL MAX ski school in Špindlerův Mlýn teaches everyone from complete beginners to advanced skiers. ### When a friend is enough When they are patient, stay with you in the practice area and do not drag you onto a run you are not ready for. A combination can also work well: one or two lessons with an instructor at the start, then practice with your friend. ### When an instructor is worth it When you are afraid of speed or falling, when nobody experienced is coming with you, or when you want to ski on your own as soon as possible. We do not run a ski school ourselves. You will find instructors right in the ski areas, and it is a good idea to book a lesson in advance. ## What to rent for your first time For the first days, the simplest option is to rent a full set: skis, boots and poles. We choose the ski length based on your height, weight and experience, and beginners usually ski on shorter skis, which are easier to turn. We adjust the bindings to your weight. We rent helmets and goggles separately, and we recommend a helmet for everyone. > **Tip from the shop:** Mention in your booking that it is your first time. The boot fits if your heel does not noticeably lift when you bend your knees. - Carry your skis clipped together, and watch out for the people around you at the lift and in the car park. - On flat ground, clip into one ski first and push yourself along as if on a scooter. Then put on both skis and take a few steps. - Going uphill on skis: turn them across the slope and climb sideways in small steps. - Snowplough: ski tips together, tails apart. You use the snowplough both to get moving and to brake. Practise it on a stretch of slope that runs out onto flat ground, where you come to a stop by yourself. - Conveyor lift: step onto it with your skis parallel, pointing in the direction of travel, and let it carry you up. - First turns: in the snowplough, shift more weight onto one ski and you will turn the other way. - Drag lift: you do not sit on a T-bar or a button lift, you let it pull you along standing up. Try it only once you can stop reliably. - Breaks: drink, eat and stop before you get really tired. > **Tip from the shop:** Falling is part of learning. When you get up after a fall, turn your skis across the slope below you so that they do not slide away. ## The FIS rules apply on the slopes Ski so that you stay in control and can stop within the distance you can see. Look up and down the slope before you set off, stop at the edge of the run, not below a ridge, and remember that the skier ahead of you has right of way.
